Underground

Underground is a sound installation in collaboration with Philippe-Aubert Gauthier developed specifically for FIMAV 2014. Along the bike ride, people could go through a projection and sound spatialization array consisting of powerful loudspeakers that have been sealed, buried underground, and connected to a system of flexible hoses. These hidden hoses act as acoustic wave guides that make it possible to distribute sound in an invisible apparatus. Beside the underground apparatus, two loudspeakers mounted on tripods and a sound system in a rack case covered with canvas tarps, stands out as sculptural forms.

Tanya St-Pierre: visual and digital arts

I do performance art, drawing, painting, collage, digital photography and photomontages, sound art and video art. But the core of my art practice is installation work that I mostly produce in collaboration with Philippe-Aubert Gauthier/ self-taught artist, PhD in acoustics and researcher in acoustics. The art work corpus questions modes of representation issued from two grand archetypes and antipodes of apprehension of the world: which is the scientific thought and the mystical thought (also called magical or archaic thought). I am especially interested in subjects that relate to historical human conditions and turmoils which relate to the cultural history: traces and sediments of social pathologies.

From 2001 to 2008, my art practice was dedicated to the exploration of possible relations between installation art and narration. My investigation of fiction brought me to a new approach to storytelling and fiction. This approach is now extracted from a total and determinist fictitious, diegetic, proposition, and tends towards more poetic and conceptual propositions. Accordingly, one finds in my recent productions torn traces of stories, fictions, characters and, especially, figures - as icons or symbols.

Member of the duo Noïzefer CWU, I also investigate sound and action in divers performance context. Philippe-Aubert Gauthier and I work with an aesthetic language that can be aggressive, corrosive and poetic at the same time. This language involves wastes, construction, noise and speech to address questions of cultural alienation and social taboos.
